Mud, dirt, sludge, in Holland we call it; ‘ Drek’ Today the riders enjoyed lots of it what made the Dutch National championships a true battle for man and machine. Thijs Zuurbier and his spot on geared up bike showed outstanding performance winning the national title!
This weekend the Dutch championships Mountain bike was held in the southern and more hilly province of the Netherlands. Team represents were; Gosse van der Meer, Roy Beukers and Thijs Zuurbier. Last mentioned showed to be today’s finest, by finishing first with a mayor lead on his concurrent.
Caused by a lot of rain the fields on which the track was build changed in to one a big slide. This made it the race even more demanding for both rider and the material.
Right from the start a small pack had formed with Robbert de Nijs, Kjell van den Boogaard, Jeroen van Eck and Thijs Zuurbier. This group was thinning out during the first part of the race. Van Eck did too much effort and had to let the other Threesome go.
As it started to rain and the track really got slippery, De Nijs slid and thereby damaged his bike so severely that he had to abort. Thijs Zuurbier also made a steering mistake what cost him some time on Van den Boogaard, who attached hard and gained some seconds.
Staying cool, but speeding up Zuurbier got hold of Vd Boogaard. “I know that I a lot stronger in the uphill, so I’d recon that I could shake him in the long climb. So I did overtaking him and such a high pace that I got a few meters on him. I was able to maintain this lead constructively, riding hard uphill and ripping through the corners. It was a good choice riding Kenda Karma tires!” Said Thijs after his finish.
Roy Beukers eventually finished on a promising 5th position. In the final round he overtook a few riders including Gosse van der Meer who suffered a mechanical caused of the dirt piling up in his gear. Van der Meer finished on rank 7.
